SOL INVICTUS or how to make fun of death by dancing.

Why do we dance? We are nothing in the universe.

Life - and not just humanity - will be no more than a match that is lit and extinguished in the heavens. Our existence will go unnoticed and our solitude in the cosmos will drive you mad. What is difficult is not the hostility of the universe but its indifference to our existence. Yet if we can integrate this indifference, and accept the challenge of life, our existence can be truly meaningful and fulfilling. No matter how deep the darkness, we must bring our own light into it. The universe, the cycle of the seasons - how do we situate ourselves in this vast, dizzying space?

From this space, related to the one that is life, delimited by a beginning and an end, the outcome for all of us will be the same, and I face it, I dance. SOL INVICTUS or how to make fun of death by dancing. Through dance, we celebrate the vital energy we need to find within ourselves to face up to our fears, to face up to ourselves. Through dance, I want to rediscover this union of peoples and cultures, above and beyond any consideration of ethnic, cultural or religious affiliation. Dance brings people together. Dance transcends human and geographical boundaries, transcends the codes of ballet, urban dance and acrobatics.

SOL INVICTUS will be a generous piece of vital energy, performed by 15 dancers from France, Europe, Brazil, Asia, North Africa and the United States of America, to music by Mikael Karlsson and Maxime Bodson, and works from the repertoire of Steve Reich and Beethoven.

Trained at the "Ecole de la danse", notably with Rosella Hightower, Hervé Koubi began his career as a performer in pieces by Jean-Christophe Paré and Emilio Calcagno.

After dancing at the Centre Chorégraphique National de Nantes with Claude Brumachon and Benjamin Lamarche, at the Centre Chorégraphique National de Caen with Karine Saporta and at Compagnie Thor in Brussels with Thierry Smits, it was in 2000 that he decided to develop his own choreographic project. It was Tradition, and all the oral and physical transmission it carries within it, that first captured his interest.

A dance that brings people together, that unites them, that makes the links between the balls of yesteryear, the rave parties and the dance gatherings of today. Then there were the notions of traces, memories and filiations, which led him to Algeria in particular, in search of his roots. So it was that in 2009, the man and his artistic path were struck by urban dance, even though it had already been present, like an echo, in his first creations.

As a choreographer who works in the field, he and his team have developed a number of regional projects based on encounters and sharing between his works, audiences and different practices. These projects question and define the boundaries of a 21st century ballet that is both heir to its history and open and contemporary. He was awarded the Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres in July 2015.

Transfuge

“With Sol Invictus, choreographer Hervé Koubi pays tribute to multiple cultures, embodied with aplomb by seventeen individuals from all walks of life and all nationalities.”

Tanz

“"Sol Invictus" is a melting pot danced without restraint, in which legendary worlds from trolls to orishas unite. A global village rite, with no urban constraints. Only a hint of hip-hop occasionally shines through the sunlight ....”

Res Musica

“Koubi's trademark "dancing together" works perfectly, and the magic is in the air. With almost as many nationalities as dancers, and all coming from very different worlds, the choreographer succeeds in creating a coherent, high-level piece, in which each dancer is able to assert his or her singularity, while working in the service of the collective.”

Sud Ouest

“"Sol Invictus", Hervé Koubi's latest creation, swept audiences off their feet at the Cadences festival.”
